Born in Manhattan, raised on the Jersey side, educated in North Carolina, England and the San Francisco Bay Area… That’s just the geography of the journey I’ve made from experiencing art solely as a viewer towards executing my visual self-expression.
My lifelong love of history combines with a deep interest in historic architecture. These fuel my quest to capture the experience of the magic and mystery of ancient and antique places. I explore these themes abstractly in my paintings and representationally through my photography.
A wonderful college professor introduced me to the beauty of Gothic Architecture and that has long stayed with me. I was inspired to photograph the English Gothic Cathedrals of Winchester, Salisbury, Wells as well as Bath Abbey in 2017. The sublime architecture, with its emphasis on horizontality versus French Gothic verticality, was serene, graceful and captivating.
Traveling on to Portugal, I was able to contrast English Gothic architecture with the Portuguese Gothic style at the Jeronimos Monastery in Belem, Lisbon. As this was my first visit to Portugal, I was thrilled by the colorful Azulejos tiles that enhance so much of Portuguese architecture.
I realized some years ago how much I enjoyed visiting Classical ruins, so planned a trip to Aegean Turkey in the fall of 2013. While it was amazing to visit such famous sites as Troy and Ephesus, it was the quieter and less frequented sites such as Nysa and Euromos that were so enchanting and evocative of a civilization long gone by. It certainly gave me cause to ponder the fate of empires past and present.
Spending a few weeks in Paris in 2011 was a jammed-pack art adventure of museums, churches, chateaux and artists’ homes. By filling my eyes and my spirit with centuries of art and architecture, I hoped to transmit the abundance of French visual culture through my own work.
